Welsh Government-backed electric car clubs grow across Wales

Welsh Government-backed electric car-sharing scheme TrydaNi has grown to more than 500 members across 13 car clubs in Wales, the Welsh Government says.

The scheme is open to individuals, businesses and non-profit organisations. Welsh Government says it has provided £1 million in funding and that membership is increasing as clubs open in more places.

TrydaNi has opened clubs in Swansea, Penygroes and Abergavenny this year, according to the announcement. A club in Bangor is also due to launch.

In Aberystwyth, the club that began in December 2024 has 99 members, Welsh Government says. It gives members access to a Vauxhall Combo Life Electric and a Renault Zoe at North Road car park.

The Welsh Government says vehicles can be hired by the hour or day through the TrydaNi app. Prices start at £2 an hour, capped at £30, plus 16p a mile for the first 100 miles.

Transport Deputy Minister Mark Hooper said car clubs could offer a way to use a car without the costs of ownership, and said the scheme gave people an opportunity to try an electric vehicle without a long-term commitment.

What this means for Wales

The expansion adds another option for people who need occasional access to a vehicle, including in rural areas where Welsh Government says public transport can be limited. Availability, membership and costs will depend on the individual club, and the announcement does not set a launch date for Bangor.
