Emergency Menai Bridge talks focus on closures, diversions and traffic information

The Welsh Government has held an emergency meeting on disruption around the Menai Suspension Bridge, bringing together the A55 operator, local authorities, trunk-road agents and North Wales Police.

Deputy Minister for Transport Mark Hooper said the discussion covered recent events, compliance, the works programme and community concerns. He said the government was considering options intended to reduce future unplanned closures, including camera technology, compliance measures and further work with partners on enforcement.

The meeting also raised concerns about public understanding of traffic management, including signage and diversion messages, and about the effect on local journey times. The Welsh Government said participants agreed that communications should improve and that local communities should receive regular updates on works progress and outstanding challenges.

Hooper said he would remain in contact with the senior team at UK Highways A55 DBFO Ltd and other partners so agreed actions are taken forward and emerging issues are identified quickly.

What this means for Wales

The release does not set a date for a long-term solution or promise an end to disruption. It does, however, confirm that the Welsh Government is treating closures, diversion information and local journey impacts as immediate issues while work on the bridge continues.
