SMMT warns EV mandate costs could put investment under pressure
The trade body says June’s battery-electric share reached 30%, but argues discounts and compliance costs remain a concern for manufacturers.
SMMT says battery-electric vehicles reached a 30% share of UK new-car registrations in June, their highest share of 2026 so far, as electrified vehicles accounted for all market growth that month.
The trade body said the June share remained below the 33% headline battery-electric target for 2026 and claimed manufacturers had absorbed more than £12 billion in discounts to support demand.
SMMT argued that the cost of meeting the mandate could affect investment and manufacturing competitiveness. It made those comments after its Regional Forum in Newport, where it said Wales' automotive sector supports 7,000 jobs and contributes £477 million to the UK economy.
